During forest walks around our diverse state of Oregon, when we're lucky during firewood cutting season, we––meaning Papa Larry and myself (Jacq)––find cured Ponderosa Pine tree trunks that are extremely flammable. Some stumps are easily 100-200 years old which is told by counting their rings or by a quick glance given their giant size.
After a horizontal slice with a chainsaw, a few hours meticulously chopping small "pitch sticks" or "pitch pine" that are perfect for starting a fire at home or in the field, 6-7 sticks are bundled together with white cotton string.
This bundle is plenty of fuel to start a season of fires if used with discretion. DO NOT place this entire bundle in a fire at once.
